Surprise Antonio Conte legacy as Tottenham Hotspur’s most valuable player revealed

Dejan Kulusevski and Cristrian Romero are ranked as Tottenham Hotspur’s two most valuable players by the CIES Football Observatory

Antonio Conte came, he saw, but he couldn’t win anything for Tottenham Hotspur fans during his 18-month stay in North London.

With his negative style of play, the fiery Italian was expected to guarantee trophies, but all he achieved was an early night’s sleep for Tottenham fans. To his credit, Spurs still had a chance to finish in the top four when Conte was fired in April, but the season quickly spiraled out of control from then.

When looking back on Conte’s leadership, the predominant impression is one of disappointment, since he was meant to be the guy to break the trophy curse. Daniel Levy twice billed him as a serial winner, but not even the four-time Serie A champion could bring home silverware as his Spurs tenure ended in catastrophe.

Conte’s signings, on the other hand, have been a bright spot in his term. While not every player has clicked, a handful of the 54-year-old’s new signings should have bright futures at Tottenham.

Pedro Porro has begun well this season under Ange Postecoglou, while Rodrigo Bentancur will be useful if he recovers from a long injury. Destiny Udogie has also emerged as a player who has the potential to take over the left-back position in the coming years.

However, according to the CIES Football Observatory, an independent research organization that specializes in football statistics and analytics, Dejan Kulusevski and Cristrian Romero are the best of the bunch. The pair are the club’s most expensive players, worth £51.5 million (€60 million), ahead of Porro, another Conte disciple, who is worth £47 million.

Spurs activated an obligation clause after first signing Kulusevski on an 18-month loan in the summer. Conte’s first big signing, Romero, personifies what the ex-Tottenham manager stands for as a manager.
While Conte fell on his sword, the majority of his signings established the seeds for the more sensitive Postecoglou to come along and nurture. A rare bright spot in an otherwise bleak period under the Italian.
