Newcastle United are said to be confident in their pursuit of Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney despite interest from other clubs.
The former Celtic left-back has fallen behind Oleksandr Zinchenko in Arsenal‘s pecking order and as such only started six games for the Gunners last season.
With Newcastle on the lookout for a left-back who can overlap as well as Kieran Trippier does on the right, the Magpies will look to exploit Kieran Tierney‘s situation at Arsenal and will make their move for the unsettled Scotland international.
Tierney would move to Newcastle to be closer to his family
According to transfer insider Dean Jones, Newcastle are confident in landing the 26-year-old who joined Arsenal for £25million in 2019. Jones told GiveMeSport: “I think that they’re confident that the competition isn’t too fierce. They’ve definitely got competitors for him, but I think they’ll be looking to get this one done as soon as they can, just so they know they can focus on other areas.”
Newcastle’s confidence makes sense with this one as it’s believed that Tierney would welcome the move in order to be closer to his family in Scotland, and obviously without dropping out of the Premier League, there’s no club closer to Scotland than Newcastle.
Kieran Tierney has a reputation for being injury prone, however he was available for the entirety of the 2022/23 season with his last major absence being at the end of the 2021/22 season when he had surgery on his knee in March. Even though he only started six games last season he did make 36 appearances in all competitions.
Tierney would add more attacking options down the left
Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon called Tierney ‘magnificent‘ and believes that he is a better defender than Zinchenko, who pips Tierney at going forward.
That being said, Dan Burn, who played out of position at left-back for Newcastle most of last season, wasn’t so comfortable at going forward, which is why Newcastle are looking at Tierney who is much more comfortable roaming down the wing and firing in a cross.
I know some fans have their reservations based on his injury record, but I’d me more than happy for us to take that risk for what we’ll get from him when he’s fit. Hopefully what Dean Jones says is true, that we’re looking to get this one wrapped up quickly.
