BEN TOZER says Wrexham aren’t in the blame game and he is confident the players will get it right at both ends of the pitch.
Wrexham go into tomorrow’s clash against Doncaster Rovers at The STóK Cae Ras on the back of last Saturday’s 1-0 derby win over Tranmere Rovers which extended the unbeaten League Two record to five matches.
It was the first clean sheet of the season in the league and although the Reds have not struggled to score goals, Phil Parkinson’s men should have won by a bigger margin after squandering a number of chances at Prenton Park.
Wrexham have leaked goals this term so Tozer was understandably delighted with the shut-out, and the club captain feels the Reds are heading in the right direction.
“The forwards have got us at the back out of trouble in the home games, but we did our job at the back against Tranmere and we probably could have gone on and scored four or five,” said Tozer, an unused substitute when manager Phil Parkinson rang the changes for Tuesday’s 1-0 EFL Trophy group stage win against Newcastle United under 21s.
“It is so important not to point the finger at each other because it is swings and roundabouts.
“It has been our fault at the back sometimes and we probably haven’t been ruthless enough at times at the other end of the pitch.
“We have just got to stick together and keep doing what’s right.”
Wrexham have taken nine points from the opening six games and sit 13th in the table, four points off top spot.
Unbeaten at home last season, picking up 22 league wins and a solitary draw, the Reds lost their first game of 2023-24 when they went down 5-3 to MK Dons on the opening day and Tozer stressed the important of making The SToK Cae Ras a fortress once again.
“Our home form last season was incredible and we need to instil that fear again into opponents when they come to our place,” said the defender.
“That is down to us on the pitch to do that.
“I’m sure off the back of the result and the performance against Tranmere, we can build on that and we won’t be too far wrong.
“We always demand more of ourselves and expect better.”
Wrexham dominated from start to finish against Tranmere with fit-again centre-back Aaron Hayden scoring the only goal 11 minutes into the second half.
It was a good day all-round as far as Tozer was concerned going into two successive home league games, with Grimsby Town the visitors next weekend.
“If we didn’t come away with three points there would have been massive frustration,” said Tozer.
“Not only did we get three points but a clean sheet which is important for us at the back.
“We know that we weren’t at the races in the first couple of games of the season but I feel that was a much better performance and something to build on.
“We had plenty of chances in the first half especially and it was a solid performance in all departments.”
