‘Surprised’: Club CEO admits he couldn’t believe that 26-year-old decided to leave them and join Everton

Angus Kinnear revealed he was taken aback by Jack Harrison’s decision to join Everton this summer.

The Leeds United CEO remarked on the Square Ball Podcast that the winger made an interesting choice given “the predicament Everton are in.”

Harrison was one of the few bright spots for the Whites in their final two seasons in the Premier League, scoring 21 goals and assisting 16 times since their promotion in 2020.

Despite appearing to be on the verge of joining Leicester City during the January transfer window, the winger agreed to a new five-year contract with the Whites in April.

Harrison agreed to a wage cut if Leeds United were relegated, and he appeared ready to assist them back to the top division quickly, but he instead chose to join Everton on loan for the season.

“From my perspective, going on loan to Everton with the predicament Everton are in, versus staying at Leeds and getting them promoted, there is a valid choice to make there, and we were surprised,” Kinnear added.

“At the time, in order to secure Jack Harrison on a new contract with a wage reduction if we went down, those were the types of things that were in place.”

Joining Everton was the perfect move for Jack Harrison.
Harrison is yet to make his debut for the Toffees, but he is expected to become a regular under Sean Dyche.

Leeds United have shown few signs of achieving promotion at the first try, sitting 15th in the Championship after winning just one of their first five games.

Leeds United may be perplexed as to why Jack Harrison chose to join Everton this season, but he obviously views himself as a Premier League player.

If the 26-year-old can impress at Goodison Park, he might play a significant role in keeping the Toffees in the Premier League. Playing in the Premier League is an honor for all players, and Harrison may realize that a strong loan term might lead to a permanent return to the top division.
