‘I had a couple of options’ – Attacker opens up about Coventry City exit

After leaving Coventry City, Carlisle United attacker Sean Maguire revealed he had a ‘few’ of alternatives in the summer.
Following winning promotion from League Two via the play-offs, Carlisle United rushed to sign the forward on a free transfer.

Maguire, 29, left Coventry after his contract expired at the end of June and considered his options before joining the Cumbrians.

According to the club’s official website, he stated, “I had a couple of options during the summer, I spoke with the gaffer (Paul Simpson) here early during pre-season.” I liked how he wanted to move the club ahead and how he planned to employ me in the team.

“There are various formations he likes to play and it’s worked so far. I spoke to Hunts (Paul Huntington) as well and he did a good job of persuading me to come!

“I know a couple of the lads already and the rest of them are a great bunch. It’s going well so far, when you’ve played with players before you always keep an eye on the results of the clubs they’re at.

“With Hunts signing here last year I kept an eye on the results last season and the way the club is moving forward now makes me glad to be part of it.”

Carlisle won race

This is an exciting time to join Carlisle with the club on the up after securing their return to League One. They won 2-0 at home to Shrewsbury Town in their last league outing.

Maguire has made six appearances for Paul Simpson’s side so far this term and will be aiming to keep his place in the side between now and the end of the campaign.

He was snapped up by previous club Coventry in January to add more competition and depth to their attacking department as they chased down promotion to the Premier League under Mark Robins.

The former Republic of Ireland international, who made 11 caps for his country, played seven times for the Sky Blues. They lost in the play-off final at Wembley to Luton Town on penalties and his deal wasn’t extended after that.

Maguire is an experienced player in the Football League and spent five-and-a-half years on the books at Preston North End. He played 170 matches for the Lilywhites and found the net on 24 occasions.

Carlisle is his home now and he turned down other opportunities to make the switch up to Cumbria. Simpson’s men are in action this weekend against Stevenage away.
