Cedric Roussel, a former Wolves striker, died at the age of 45.

Wolves have paid tribute to former striker Cedric Roussel, who died at the age of 45.


Roussel died of a heart attack this afternoon in Belgium, where he was seated on a terrace in Grote Markt, Mons, according to local media. The emergency personnel responded swiftly and attempted resuscitation, but it did not work.

 

Wolves said on social media, “Our hearts go out to Cedric Roussel’s family and friends.” Our former player went away at the age of 45.”

Another of Roussel’s old clubs, RAEC Mons, broke the news with the message: “We would like to convey our deepest sympathy to the family and loved ones of Roussel. Thank you Cédric, you have left your mark on our club history.” The Belgium national team account added: “We send our condolences to the family and friends of Cedric Roussel.”

He joined Wolves as one of Dave Jones’s first acquisitions in early 2001 and was on the margins of the first team throughout the 2001/02 play-off campaign before moving on loan to Mons, whom he subsequently joined permanently the following summer. He went on to play for a number of clubs, including Genk and Standard Liege, and he earned three Belgium caps.
