Wolves make a disappointing announcement on £360,000 player once billed as ‘the real deal

Defender Christian Marques has officially left Wolves to join Swiss outfit Yverdon Sport on a permanent deal, in news that has surprised a few people today.

Marques has returned to the country of his birth, having spent four years at Molineux.

Marques captained the U18s and U21s, and one point had looked like he could potentially make an impact for the first-team.

He was named on the bench by Nuno Espirito Santo for the Europa League quarter-final against Sevilla.

But Marques never actually made his first-team debut for Wolves.

He had a couple of loan spells in the last couple of years.

His first was to Portuguese outfit Belenenses SAD, but he did not play.

He then went to Forest Green Rovers and make a decent impression, only to suffer an injury – prompting Wolves to recall the player.

James Collins suggested earlier this year that Marques was being lined up for another loan move.

For some Wolves fans today, this news is actually a little disappointing. And that is understandable given Marques was genuinely one of Wolves’ most exciting prospects only a few years ago…

Christian Marques didn’t live up to the hype at Wolves

A few years ago, Marques was seen by many as the potential heir to Conor Coady at Wolves.

He was operating in the same position as Coady at youth level, in the middle of a back three.

In 2020, The Athletic ran a feature on Marques billing him as ‘the real deal’.

At a reported £360,000, he was the most expensive academy signing in the club’s history at the time.

Interestingly, he was a player Matt Hobbs had identified in his previous role as head of academy scouting as being one of the best players in Europe in his position for his age.

Marques had been the captain of Switzerland at youth level, and he seemed well on track to break through to the Wolves first-team.

He did, but he just couldn’t make that final step and actually get any minutes. His loan spells didn’t work out, and now we are here.

It is really disappointing that is hasn’t happened for Marques, given the hype around him a few years ago.

But Wolves clearly feel comfortable in making this decision, and Marques will now hope to kickstart his career back in his homeland.
