Jose Mourinho explains why he started Tottenham youngster Dane Scarlett against West Brom.

Jose Mourinho stated that he wanted to be the manager who gave Dane Scarlett his Premier League debut since the attacker has a bright future.

Scarlett, 16, became Tottenham’s youngest Premier League player when he came off the bench in stoppage time of Sunday’s 2-0 win over West Brom.

The Spurs academy product now trains full-time with Mourinho’s first-team squad while also playing for the Under-18s and development team.

Scarlett made his Spurs debut against Ludogorets in the Europa League in November, and Mourinho sees a bright future for the Londoner.

“I don’t think he touched the ball,” Mourinho said on BBC Radio 5Live.

“However, the feeling of the kid also coming on means a lot for the academy, a lot for the kid because he’s 16, and a lot for me because I wanted to be the one to put him on in a Premier League match.”

“Because I know he’ll be famous in a few years.”

Spurs cruised against the Baggies thanks to second-half goals from Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, snapping a three-game losing streak in the Premier League.

“I’m sorry I’m not going to talk about Kane and Son because everyone on the field was fantastic and gave everything,” Mourinho stated.
