The now-Leicester City veteran praised the young goalkeeper on Instagram (20 September) after he signed a two-year contract extension with the Merseyside club.

Cannon joined Everton in the summer after a successful Championship loan at Preston North End, while Crellin awaits his senior Toffees debut.

The social media outpour of congratulations for the young goalkeeper indicates that he is a well-liked asset at Goodison Park with first-team player Lewis Dobbin sharing their excitement regarding his new contract.

Crellin has been a mainstay for the Toffees’ youth set-up, but their season in the Premier League 2 has not got off to the best start. Crellin himself has let seven goals in after just two appearances, with the Toffees finding themselves at the bottom of the table.

That being said, the former Bolton loanee has earned himself numerous appearances for England’s youth set-up with his last appearance being for the under-20s in 2019, showing his significant potential.

Cannon played with Crellin regularly in the past two seasons in the Premier League 2, ending their campaign last season in a respectable eighth place. The striker has since moved on to senior football in the Championship but is yet to make an appearance for the Foxes.

Crellin meanwhile is hopeful of first-team action soon enough but confessed that he is eyeing up another loan move this January. As quoted by the Liverpool Echo (20 September), he said: “[I’d like to] get to January and go out and play some games on loan to show everyone here at the club what I can do. Then come back next season and go from there.”

He tips himself for a bright future in Merseyside, but his journey to first-team football could be a while away yet.

In other Everton news, Jim White has shared his “cliff-edge” verdict on the Toffees’ financial situation.
