Jannik Vestergaard is expected to bring his unhappy spell at Leicester to an end this summer regardless of which division the club are in.
The Dane was bought by Brendan Rodgers in summer 2021 following a serious injury to Wesley Fofana but quickly fell from favour despite the £15million transfer fee.
Now with only one year remaining on his deal, both Leicester and Vestergaard are keen to part ways.
The 30-year-old’s relationship with Rodgers – who was sacked in April – deteriorated so badly that he was forced to train alone in March, following an interview in which Vestergaard said it was ‘strange’ that Rodgers had pushed for his signing and rarely used him.
Though the slate was wiped clean under Rodgers’ replacement Dean Smith, Vestergaard sustained a hamstring injury an Under-21 fixture, ruling him out for the rest of the season.
Vestergaard could have left Leicester last summer but rejected a move to Fulham, while Leicester were unwilling to sanction a loan deal elsewhere, amid interest from Brentford, Nice and Valencia.
Then in January, there were offers from Hertha Berlin and Monaco but Vestergaard was reluctant to leave his heavily pregnant wife in England.
His last first-team appearance for the Foxes was in the FA Cup win at Gillingham on January 7, one of only three he has made this term. Vestergaard’s lack of action also meant he missed out on a place in Denmark’s squad for the World Cup late last year.
Vestergaard’s injury means he will not be involved as Leicester try to preserve their Premier League status on Sunday. They will almost certainly stay up if they beat West Ham and Everton fail to take three points against Bournemouth.
