Ohio State RB Chip Trayanum into the transfer portal; is Kentucky a possible destination?

The backup to Treyveon Henderson is in the portal, and Kentucky seems like a possible landing spot.

Running back Chip Trayanum of the Ohio State Buckeyes has registered his name on the portal, and he may be a target for the Kentucky Wildcats, as reported by Matt Jones of KSR.

It’s unclear at this point what role he would play in the backfield—a backup or a starter.

To his credit, Trayanum, who replaced starting running back Treveyon Henderson, led the Buckeyes in rushing this season with 373 yards and three touchdowns on just 85 carries. In addition, he caught nine passes for 53 yards. At the end of the season, he had a 73.4 PFF grade—that of a strong starter.

As time ran out in the 17-14 victory over Notre Dame, he scored the game-winning touchdown, making it one of the Buckeyes’ most memorable plays of 2023.

In 2022, Trayanum came to Columbus as a transfer student from Arizona State. He was initially a 2020 class recruit and would be a fifth-year student in 2024.

With only one game of double-digit carries (20 carries for 61 yards and a touchdown against Maryland), Trayanum saw extremely few carries in 2023.

Trayanum has 227 carries for 1,157 yards (5.1 average) and 13 touchdowns in his career.

Given that Ramon Jefferson is no longer eligible, Ray Davis is heading to the NFL Draft, and JuTahn McClain is in the draft, Kentucky will probably need to add a few running backs from the draft.

Kentucky could make a strong run at well-known backs Rocket Sanders and Mario Anderson. Nonetheless, a lot of elite programs will target them because they’re undoubtedly among the best backs in the portal.

Unquestionably one to watch.
