‘He’s been winning everything’: Benji’s high praise for ‘outstanding’ teenager

Over the past 25 years, the Wests Tigers have produced some champion juniors, and this latest group may be on par with any in the past.

Consider Mitchell Moses, Robbie Farah, and James Tedesco. A few young players at Concord are now honing their craft and have the potential to compete with all of them.

Teenagers Lachlan Galvin and Talyn Da Silva get their names entered into the black book. Galvin, a rising gun, is scheduled to make his Wests Tigers debut at the formal NRL trials the following weekend.

Galvin, 18, is straight out of Westfield Sports High School last year and despite still being a teenager is more than handling himself with the Wests Tigers top 30.

Tigers coach Benji Marshall, who knows a thing or two about being a young gun half, told Fox League Galvin has been a standout in everything he’s done over the course of the off season.

“He’s been outstanding. He reminds me a lot of a Scott Hill type of five-eighth where he’s big and robust and a great ball runner but then he can also ball play as well,” Marshall said.

“He’s been winning everything at training from the 1.2km time trial to whatever the challenge is he’s super fit and he’s got all the makings of a very good NRL player.”

The Wests Tigers have finally acquired someone in the front office who knows what a Steeden genuinely looks like or when a player agency is trying to market a Datsun 180B that looks like a Mercedes, thanks to Shane Richardson’s appointment as CEO.

Richardson quickly changed the conversation to emphasize that the Tigers are a development team, using juniors Da Silva and Galvin from Campbelltown as examples.

The youth movement is leading the way in a change in mindset from buying anyone on the open market as a band-aid solution to focusing on what the Wests Tigers actually need.

Galvin, an Australian schoolboy and junior from Campbelltown, led Westfield Sports High to the title last year and was awarded the Peter Sterling Medal for being the best player in the National Schoolboys Cup grand final.

Galvin and Da Silva, two juniors from Campbelltown who are both products of Westfield Sports, were members of the Wests Tigers side that took home the Harold Matthews trophy in 2022.
