Texas Longhorns quarterback Maalik Murphy intends to enter the transfer portal.
According to Thamel, Murphy has informed ESPN that he will not be with the team when the Longhorns face the No. 2 Washington Huskies in the College Football Playoff semi-finals in the Sugar Bowl on January 1.
“It’s nothing against Texas at all,” Murphy told ESPN. “I’m doing this completely for me and my future. In my view, I will always be a Longhorn and a member of this fantastic team.”
Murphy, a member of Texas’ 2022 recruiting class, was Quinn Ewers’ backup this season and made two starts, winning at home against BYU and Kansas State. Without his performances in two critical conference games, the Longhorns would not be one of four teams in the College Football Playoff today.
This season, he completed 40 of 71 passes for 477 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Murphy’s first career start ended with a 35-6 victory over BYU on October 28. He connected with Adonai Mitchell for two touchdowns and said that coach Steve Sarkisian believed in him “huge.”
“He believed in me,” Murphy said about coach Steve Sarkisian. “If he can compose that many openers as passes for me in my first start, it just shows me that he isn’t letting up and believes in my abilities. So that was enormous.”
Murphy had two interceptions in the following week’s tight 33-30 overtime win over Kansas State on November 4, but he recovered and made some important plays down the stretch to help Texas survive.
With Murphy’s departure, Arch Manning will take over as Ewers’ backup against Washington in the Sugar Bowl.
Texas fans will have to wait and watch what happens in a talented Longhorns quarterback room as the season comes to a finish.
