Are Charlotte FC set for record-breaking Luciano Rodríguez transfer?

Major League Soccer team A transfer market splash could soon come from Charlotte FC’s acquisition of Uruguayan sensation Luciano Rodríguez.

Numerous rumors claim Charlotte is prepared to pay a club record amount for the Liverpool Montevideo forward, making it one of the costliest transfer fees in MLS history.

According to The Athletic, Rodríguez, who won the 2023 Under-20 World Cup with Uruguay, is eager to join a North American league after his January swap to Europe and Argentina fell through.

The 20-year-old was a target for Argentine league winners River Plate and Dutch champions Feyenoord, as Diario AS revealed last month, but neither team was able to successfully conclude negotiations with Liverpool Montevideo.

Rodríguez was valued at $15 million by the Uruguayan domestic title holders, who also wanted a 15%–20% sell-on option included in the deal. With an initial $8 million bid plus 50% of any potential transfer price they earned for the player, River came the closest to reaching an agreement.

Due to their strong financial position, Liverpool Montevideo is not under any pressure to sell. According to club insiders, Rodríguez will only be permitted to depart for an amount that is nearly equal to the January asking price given by Los Negriazules.
