Purdue coach Ryan Walters eager to make head coaching debut against Fresno State
(AP) — WEST LAFAYETTE, IN Ryan Walters, the coach at Purdue, is settling into his ideal position.
Upon entering the practice field, he observes his players pursuing his vision using a strategy he began developing over ten years ago. His new home pitch, the recently refurbished Ross-Ade Stadium, has a tunnel view from his office.
The 37-year-old Walters might even sprint into the mist on Saturday while the train horn sounds. When the Boilermakers take on Fresno State, the sixth-youngest head coach in the Bowl Subdivision will be set to make his debut.
Walters stated, “I flew out here on Monday and we were walking around the field (that) Monday evening. I accepted the job on a Sunday night.” “My family and I were inside the stadium when my picture appeared on the Jumbotron.” I had the impression that this was true, that I was the head coach. I felt the weight’s gravity right away and wanted to get to work right once.
Ever since that December moment, his schedule has been almost nonexistent.
In addition to recruiting prep talents and hiring assistants, Walters spent months convincing some Purdue players to stay while obtaining help through the transfer portal. He even gave a scholarship to Devin Mockobee, the team’s leading rusher from the previous season. Before camp commenced, he spent the summer getting used to his new campus, community, and way of life after spring ball.
Walters, who has spent the majority of his life around football, is unfazed by the frenzy.
When Gary Barnett was an offensive assistant at Colorado, his father, Marc, was a quarterback. Former Buffaloes standout Eric Bienemy, who is currently the offensive coordinator and associate head coach for the Washington Commanders, babysat him as a child.
