Angels Miss Out On Star Free Agent Infielder

The Halos miss out on another top-tier free agent.

This time, third baseman Matt Chapman has decided to sign with the San Francisco Giants, meaning the Los Angeles Angels will not be able to sign another free agent. He signed a $54 million, three-year contract with the Giants.

The Angels will now need to go elsewhere for Chapman, who was previously mentioned as a possible addition. In addition to adding another right-handed bat to the order, he would have provided third base with a reliable defensive option.

The seasoned infielder hit.240 with 17 home runs and 54 runs batted in during his 140 games with the Toronto Blue Jays in the previous campaign. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated remarkable longevity, participating in at least 140 games in five of the last six seasons.

It was speculated that if Chapman signed with the Angels, current third baseman Anthony Rendon could be able to reduce his defensive playing time, which would reduce the likelihood of more injuries. But the front office apparently couldn’t afford the price tag.

Throughout the offseason, the Halos front office has been trying to add more talent, but nothing has actually materialized as of yet. Though there is still time before the season begins, this is just another instance of their failing to bring in more production.
