Against Newport County, Paddy Madden scored the game-winning goal in injury time to give Stockport County a new lease on life.
After Nick Townsend saved Madden’s penalty kick, Newport was headed for a well-earned point.
Until Madden scored in the 93rd minute following a set-piece, further excellent stops appeared to be the only thing keeping Stockport out.
After going nearly a month without scoring, Stockport’s victory keeps them three points behind Mansfield Town in League Two.
Newport drops to 13th place following consecutive losses.
Leader of Newport County, Graham Coughlan:
“I believed that our boys gave their all. It was to be expected that Stockport was the superior team. Despite the constant pressure, our boys persevered.
“We didn’t play very well with the ball during the game. We were disciplined and well-organized on defense, and I felt our defense was excellent.
“I felt Nick Townsend was excellent. To be fair, let’s give Stockport the credit they deserve for winning the game overall.
“But, under the circumstances, I thought we deserved to come away with a clean sheet given the defensive structure and commitment that the lads showed.”
