After missing 2023, Caples looks to return in big way for Broncos

BOISE — Center Mason Randolph of Boise State acknowledges that it took him a while to identify Latrell Caples in his new No. 3 jersey this spring.

But Randolph knew Caples was back when the Boise State wide receiver laid out his first block.

Randolph recollects, “I was like, ‘Who’s No. 3,’ and then he went and messed someone up on a block.” He excitedly stepped off the sidelines, and I realized, “Oh, that’s Latrell.”

After missing the entire previous season due to an Achilles injury, Caples returned to the team not only with a new jersey number (he traded his old No. 7 jersey for a few pairs of shoes) but also with a newfound lease of life.

Caples is ready to continue where he left off in the 2022 season, when he led the Broncos with 549 receiving yards on 51 receptions and four touchdown grabs. He is currently back and taking part in spring practice for the Broncos.

Caples rejoins a wide receiver room, which, despite losing two starters to graduation and a third to the transfer portal in the middle of last season, still looks stacked. With Caples out last year, Prince Strachan got valuable playing time as a true freshman last season, as did Austin Bolt, who returned from an injury late in the year. Coaches praise the development of Chase Penry, and the Broncos added a pair of highly touted transfer receivers in the offseason in Chris Marshall and Cam Camper, who was a teammate of Caples at Lancaster (Texas) High.
