Cavs’ Dan Gilbert ‘Confident’ Donovan Mitchell Will Sign Contract Extension
Dan Gilbert, the governor of the Cleveland Cavaliers, believes Donovan Mitchell will never move.
Gilbert expressed confidence that Mitchell will sign a long-term contract extension with the team this offseason to Tom Withers of the Associated Press.
“We’ve been talking to him, sure, for the last couple of years about extending this contract,” Gilbert stated. “We believe he’ll extend. You can tell he likes the city if you listen to him speak.
Since our players are still extremely young and we’re still building the foundation of the team, of which he is undoubtedly the most important member, he enjoys the situation in Cleveland.”
Mitchell has a player option for 2025–2026 and is bound to the deal until 2024–2025. It’s highly likely that he will choose down his $37.1 million option in favor of a long-term contract that would bring in well over $50 million annually. This summer, Cleveland might extend its offer to Mitchell by about $200 million.
