The Daily Star have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are now ‘very close’ to getting a deal for Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Edmond Tapsoba over the line.

The speculation linking Tapsoba with a move to Spurs has been steadily intensifying over the last week, with 90 min reporting a few days ago that Tottenham are making progress in a deal to sign the Leverkusen star.

However, the report added that the Lilywhites are wary of the fact that other Premier League, including Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle United, are also being kept informed about the 24-year-old’s situation.

It was subsequently claimed by Fabrizio Romano on  AMP (23 July) that the Burkina Faso international is expected to cost around €45m-€50m (£38.7m-£43m).

However, The Daily Star have now suggested that Tottenham are close to striking a deal for Taposoba for just over half of that fee.

The publication claims that Spurs have launched a £25m offer for the centre-back and that a source close to the North London club has confirmed that a transfer is ‘very close’ to completion.

This comes after Spurs already confirmed the permanent signing of Dejan Kulusevski and are set to welcome Guglielmo Vicarion through the doors this week, medical permitting (TalkSPORT).

One can argue that Taposoba would be an even more crucial signing for Tottenham than James Maddison, given the club’s issues in central defence.

So, I am pleased to see that the Lilywhites are prioritising the signing of the 24-year-old.

Spurs might also be fearful of other clubs entering the race for Taposoba, which is why they appear to be accelerating their efforts.

It appears like the Maddison pursuit might prove a little more straightforward to complete, with Newcastle now seemingly focused on other signings.
