Kitchener Rangers sign forward Avry Anstis

The Kitchener Rangers continue to build for the future.

The Ontario Hockey League club signed its fifth player in about a week by locking up forward Avry Anstis to a scholarship and development deal on Monday.

The 16-year-old Pittsburgh native was the team’s 11th-round pick in this year’s OHL draft.

“Avry is a player we followed closely all year and improved his game every time we watched him,” said general manager Mike McKenzie, in a news release. “He is a smooth skater and skilled player that creates offence.”

Anstis joins a bumper crop of recent signees that includes forwards Evan Headrick, Weston Cameron and Matthew Hlacar, and defenceman Alexander Bilecki.

“To be drafted by the Kitchener Rangers has been an honour and a thrill,” said Anstis, in news release. “I am humbled with the opportunity to continue my hockey development with a group so rich in tradition and excellence.”

The winger left Pittsburgh to play his Under-14 and U15 seasons at Shattuck St. Mary’s preparatory school in Minnesota, where he had 28 goals and 55 points in 57 games.

Anstis took part and showed well in Kitchener’s development camp late last month.
