Tennessee fell behind in the first inning on Sunday, proving unable to spark a comeback against Vanderbilt.
Behind a dominant pitching performance, the Commodores held on to a 3-0 score to defeat Tennessee. The Vols were shut out for the first time this season.
The loss marked the Vols’ (42-10, 19-8 SEC) first game three loss since the beginning of SEC play. Meanwhile, Vanderbilt (34-18, 12-15) snapped a nine-game losing streak to Tennessee and a seven-game losing streak in SEC play.
The game began with a pitcher’s duel looming. Vanderbilt’s JD Thompson opened by striking out the side before Tennessee’s Zander Sechrist did the same. The only difference was that the Commodores added a single and a home run on Sechrist before he could record the third out. After one inning, Vanderbilt held a 2-0 lead while the pitchers combined for six strikeouts.
Scoring continued for the Commodores in the second inning, bringing a run home. An RBI bloop single extended the lead to three runs after two innings.
Nate Snead took over on the mound to start the third inning.
