Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman has been stretchered off during today’s open training session in Singapore after appearing to sustain an ankle injury.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have been training at the Singapore National Stadium ahead of tomorrow’s fixture against the Lion City Sailors which will bring the curtain down on the club’s Asia-Pacific tour.

Whiteman was due to take his place on the substitutes bench in Sunday’s pre-season clash against Leicester City in Thailand, only for heavy rainfall to see the match postponed.

Alfie Whiteman suffers ankle injury in Spurs training session

Brandon Austin was given the second half of the match in Perth against West Ham United and Whiteman would have likely seen action in tomorrow’s fixture in what comes as a huge blow to the 24-year-old’s chances of battling Austin for the third-choice keeper role in North London behind Guglielmo Vicario and Fraser Forster, once Hugo Lloris completes his expected departure.

The Athletic journalist Charlie Eccleshare, who is in attendance at the session took to Twitter to confirm that Whiteman had suffered a serious injury.

He wrote: “Alfie Whiteman has suffered a bad injury in the open training session – stretchered off with suggestions it could be his knee.”

Eccleshare then provided an update to confirm the injury was to the lower leg, adding: “It’s actually an ankle injury.”

Whiteman who came through the Tottenham academy has previously spent time away from the club on loan having enjoyed two separate loan spells at Swedish side Degerfors IF.

Hopefully, Whiteman’s injury is not too serious and will not hamper any chances of either himself of Austin heading out on loan this season to get further first-team footballing experience.
