Ethan Ampadu become Leeds United’s first summer signing last week as he made the switch from Chelsea

Jermaine Beckford believes Ethan Ampadu has all the attributes required to thrive at Leeds United. Ampadu completed his move to Elland Road last week from Chelsea, to become the first signing of the summer for Daniel Farke and new owners 49ers Enterprises.

The versatile midfielder, who is just as comfortable playing as a centre-back, made his first outing in a Leeds shirt on Saturday, starting for the Whites in their 2-0 friendly loss to Monaco in York. Despite the result, Ampadu caught the eye at the LNER Community Stadium, giving supporters an encouraging glimpse of what’s to come from him when the competitive action gets underway next weekend.

Of course, the hope is that Leeds can continue to add to their squad in a number of key positions, but as far as first summer recruits go, Beckford, who made 126 appearances for the Whites during his time at the club, has been hugely impressed.

“He’s brilliant,” Beckford told LeedsLive. “He’s been really, really good. He’s an interesting player, a very exciting player as well at times.

“What I like about him is his experience, with the national team, the Wales national team. I like that he’s come from a big football club. He’s been at big football clubs as well, so he understands expectations.

“He understands pressure and you can kind of see that when he’s played, he’s very comfortable on the ball. He’s tough. He’s a tough tackler when he needs to be but also he does look neat and tidy, he’s thrown a few neat through balls in as well as breaking up play.

“He keeps it simple and he shows bags of energy. So I’ve been impressed.”

Beckford was speaking to LeedsLive to promote Hisense’s continued involvement with Leeds United and the electronics company have a number of exclusive offers for Leeds fans and members.
