Leeds United were said to have registered an interest in the SC Heerenveen defender at the weekend

Milan van Ewijk has completed his move to Coventry City, just days after being linked with Leeds United.

The Sky Blues, who narrowly missed out on Premier League promotion when reaching the play-off final last season, have been tracking the Dutch under-21 international all summer. They were said to have a bid rejected earlier in the summer by Eredivisie side SC Heerenveen.

That prompted a report from Dutch journalist Sander de Vries from the Leeuwarder Courant to report on Sunday that Leeds were also showing interest in the right-back. Belgian side Anderlecht had also reportedly had a bid rejected this summer as well.

But just days after the initial Leeds report, van Ewijk completed his move to Coventry, with an undisclosed fee agreed. The 22-year-old has signed a four-year deal at the Coventry Building Society Arena, with Mark Robins needing to strengthen his right wing-back options this summer following the departures of loan man Brooke Norton-Cuffy and long-serving Fankaty Dabo.

Robins said: “We are very pleased to welcome Milan to Coventry City. He is an exciting player who really fits in with the way we play at Coventry City. He has great pace and also quality going forward, as well defensive ability too. Milan is another signing that I am sure will excite supporters ahead of the new campaign and we look forward to working with him.”

Leeds’ search for summer reinforcements goes on, though it remains to be seen how genuine their interest in van Ewijk was. Given how late they emerged in this race, and the fact that it quickly prompted an agreement between Coventry and Heerenveen, it looks very much like the Whites’ name was used as a means of speeding up the process.
