Leeds United reportedly entered the race to sign Heerenveen right-back Milan van Ewijk, casting doubts over the futures of both right-backs at Leeds, but the Dutchman is close to joining Coventry City.
Full-backs are surely going to be on the agenda for Leeds in the remainder of the summer transfer window, given the defensive Leeds don’t have currently.
Left-back is perhaps the more pertinent issue, but the club have now been linked with a move for Heerenveen right-back Milan van Ewijk – per journalist Sander de Vries.
Coventry City are said to have tabled a new and improved offer for the 22-year-old right-back, aiming to turn the screw before the Whites strike – and de Vries has now claimed a deal is close with the Sky Blues.
Here, we look at two knock-on effects that van Ewijk’s arrival could have had at Leeds…
Cody Drameh would surely leave
Signing a 22-year-old right-back while you have one a year younger that is aiming to make the starting spot his own is a damning indictment.
Registering interest in van Ewijk and pursuing him would strongly suggest that Cody Drameh already has one foot out of the door this summer.
While his performances in the side indicate the opposite of him pushing to leave or even wanting to, he has just a year left on his deal and we’re no closer to seeing that resolved.
Van Ewijk’s signing would mean that it would simply be a matter of time before the young right-back sought new pastures.
Leeds not signing van Ewijk gives us chance that Drameh will be our starter this season.
What next for Luke Ayling?
Again, another who is sure to be assessing his future with the signing of a very talented young right-back is Luke Ayling.
His personality in the dressing room can’t be understated, but he’s sure to be having a reduced role in the starting lineup this season even if Drameh stays, let alone if we splurge on a new signing there.
Ayling is into the final year of his deal too and there will likely be big changes to his starting prospects following relegation.
Ayling is surely wondering what the future holds for him, as Leeds take Sam Byram on trial too.
