Worker who died in ‘machinery incident’ at Everton’s new stadium named as 26-year-old fan of Premier League club

Michael Jones, 26, was identified as the worker who died in an incident at Everton’s new stadium in Liverpool.

His bereaved family shared a photo of the lifelong Everton supporter who was working on the Premier League club’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.

It is believed he died on Monday as a result of severe head injuries. He was said to have been involved in a “heavy machinery incident” according to reports.

“The family would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support,” his relatives stated in a statement on Tuesday.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend Michael.”

“He was a lifelong Blues fan who was overjoyed to be working on the new stadium.” We’d want to thank the NHS employees and coworkers who went above and above for Michael. He will be sorely missed.”

Jones, from Kirkby, was transported to Aintree Hospital after emergency services were summoned at around 1pm on Monday, but he was subsequently pronounced dead.

Merseyside Police, in collaboration with the Health and Safety Executive, is investigating what occurred.

Work on the site has been halted.

Everton hopes to move in for the 2024-25 season after vacating Goodison Park, its ancient home approximately two miles away.

“Everyone at Everton Football Club is heartbroken by the news that a male worker has died following an incident at the Everton Stadium site at Bramley-Moore Dock,” the club said on Monday.

“Everyone associated with Everton’s thoughts and condolences are with his family, friends, and colleagues at this unbearably sad time.”
