£45m player is about to sign a new contract after Tottenham fail to sign him

Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba is about to sign a new contract after Tottenham Hotspur failed to sign him.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano shared more details on the Burkina Faso international’s future on social media.

Tottenham did some excellent business during the summer transfer window and are currently reaping the results.

Ange Postecoglou has drastically altered their style of play, with new arrivals James Maddison and Micky Van de Ven playing a significant role.

However, Postecoglou would have preferred additional coverage in one place.

Postecoglou said following their friendly against Barcelona that he wanted one more signing at centre-back.

Van de Ven has been thrust into the starting lineup and has performed admirably.

Youngster Ashley Phillips has also been brought in and travelled with the squad to Burnley yesterday.

Tottenham wanted to sign Edmond Tapsoba as well but he now looks set to sign a new contract with Leverkusen.

His initial £45m asking price is likely to rise as he extends his stay in the Bundesliga.

Tottenham target Tapsoba to sign new contract

Posting on X, Romano said: “EXCLUSIVE: Edmond Tapsoba, set to sign new long term contract at Bayer Leverkusen.

“Agreement in place until June 2028, as club sources confirm.

“Tapsoba was in Tottenham & also Man United list — he’s ready to sign new deal.

“Huge news for Bayer04 & Xabi Alonso.”

Tapsoba would have been a fantastic addition for Tottenham, but the contract news means Postecoglou will have to seek elsewhere in January if he still wants to acquire players.

It means Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier are his current backups, despite the fact that both are free agents this summer.

The Colombian came on against Brentford and appeared in the Carabao Cup against Fulham, but struggled.

Eric Dier hasn’t played this season and was one of the players Spurs hoped to offload in the dying hours of the transfer window.

The fact that he was left out of Tottenham’s squad for Phillips on Saturday isn’t a good indicator for his long-term future at the club.

His contract expires next summer, and it now appears that he will stay for the next 12 months before leaving.
