Enzo Maresca’s abandoned £15m plan revealed after Leicester City transfer failure

The latest Leicester City news as the club were said to be working on a deal for the prolific Georgian striker during the summer transfer window.

According to sources, Leicester City missed out on a move for striker Georges Mikautadze during the summer transfer window due to their failure to sign a striker.

On deadline day, City added to their attacking options with the late signing of Tom Cannon from Everton on a permanent contract. The 20-year-old will cost City up to £7.5 million.

He was City’s ninth new arrival of the summer as Enzo Maresca rebuilt the squad following relegation to the Championship at the end of last season. But it seems that there could have been another new arrival, should City have been able to move on another striker.

According to the Sun journalist Alan Nixon, via Patreon , City were working on a deal to bring Georgian international Georges Mikautadze to the King Power Stadium in a £15 million deal. But in order for a deal to go through, a striker had to first leave the club.

Patson Daka and Kelechi Iheanacho were both connected with moves away, with Daka on the verge of a deadline-day move to Bournemouth before the deal fell through with only one hour of the transfer window remaining. Even if that transaction had gone through, City’s ambitions of signing Mikautadze would have been dashed.

On August 30, the 22-year-old officially joined Dutch heavyweights Ajax for a cost of €16 million (£13.7 million), which could rise to €19 million (£16.2 million). The intrigue in the striker stems from his 24 goals for Metz last season, which helped the French team achieve promotion to Ligue 1. His form continued this season, scoring twice in his first three games before joining Ajax.

Papy Mendy has completed his transfer after leaving Leicester City.
The midfielder is the latest of Leicester City’s out-of-contract players to find a new club where he will play Champions League football.

Nampalys Mendy, a former Leicester City midfielder, is the latest player to find a new club after departing the King Power Stadium on a free transfer in the summer.

The midfielder was one of several players who left the club as their contracts expired. Caglar Soyuncu signed Atletico Madrid, Youri Tielemans joined Aston Villa, Daniel Amartey joined Besiktas, and Jonny Evans was a surprise addition to Manchester United’s team.

After just over two months without a club, Mendy’s next move has now been confirmed with the Senegal international joining French side Lens. The 31-year-old has signed a contract until 2025.

Mendy was with City for seven years, starting as a replacement for N’Golo Kante in the summer of 2016. After dealing with injuries throughout his early City career, he spent the 2017/2018 season on loan with old club Nice.

The midfielder had a mixed career at the King Power Stadium, appearing 118 times and scoring one goal, a stunning strike against Tottenham last season. Last season, he made 24 appearances across all competitions but couldn’t assist the club avoid relegation to the Championship.

Mendy established himself as a key player for Senegal during his time at City, playing against England in the World Cup in Qatar back in December. Speaking to the club’s official website, Lens’ general manager Arnaud Pouille explained why the club made a move for Mendy this summer.

“The signing of Nampalys as a free player brings more depth to our midfield squad,” he said. “Revealed in Ligue 1, regular in the Premier League and senior player in the Senegalese selection, Nampalys combines experience and leadership. We had been following him for several weeks already and had established constructive discussions.”

Lens finished a surprise second in Ligue 1 last season, meaning that Mendy will be playing Champions League football in the coming campaign. The French side have been drawn in group B alongside Sevilla, Arsenal and PSV Eindhoven.
