Free Agent Close To Saying Yes To Stoke City

Former Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark is close to saying yes to a move to join Stoke City on a free transfer,

The experienced defender is a free agent after being released by Newcastle United and is currently looking for a new team to help his career.

He has Championship suitors, with the Potters showing particular interest in bringing him in.

Manager Alex Neil has been busy acquiring players throughout summer, but he believes his club needs one more defender moving forward.

Stoke have already conceded six goals in their first five league games, and Neil is hoping that the six-foot-one-inch defender will be able to provide the defensive solidity that he need.

The player, on his part, is close to accepting terms to join the Stoke City squad.

Clark could provide versatility to the Stoke City team as he has the ability to slot in at the left-back position as well.

Stoke City are ready to make a move for free agent Ciaran Clark, says Alan Nixon.

Clark, 33, was released by Newcastle United at the end of last season, following a six-year spell with the Magpies in which he made 129 total appearances.

He steadily fell out of favour at the club, spending time on loan at Sheffield United last season where injury limited him to just 10 Championship outings for the Blades.

And now it looks like the 36-cap Republic of Ireland international is set for a Championship return with Stoke City, with Nixon revealing on his Patreon yesterday that the Potters are ready to make a move for Clark.

Alex Neil’s side signed 18 new players over the summer, including a handful of free agents in Michael Rose, Enda Stevens, and Daniel Johnson.

Somehow, Stoke City seem keen on adding more names and another centre-back too, despite bringing in two new centre-backs in Rose and Luke McNally.

Neil’s side have started poorly and it seems like the Potters need a bit of readjusting time with their new players, and so adding another into the mix doesn’t seem like it’ll help all that much.

Clark remains an experienced player on the free agent market and a player who’ll no doubt have interest now that the transfer window is shut, and a move to Stoke might appeal to him.

Though whether game time would be readily-available for him at Stoke remains to be seen, given the influx of new signings at the bet365 Stadium this summer.

Expect Clark to be weighing up his options but expect a number of clubs to be looking into a potential swoop for him now that the window has closed.
