‘I was taken aback.’ Steven Bergwijn explains why he left Tottenham Hotspur.
The Dutch international departed Spurs earlier this summer after joining Ajax.
Steven Bergwijn has spoken out about his choice to quit Tottenham Hotspur for the upcoming season.
The former PSV Eindhoven player spent two years at the north London club. However, after failing to gain a regular starting berth under Antonio Conte, he decided to quit Tottenham and return to the Netherlands.
He told Ajax’s official website, “It took a while, there was a lot of back and forth, but here we are.”
“It began around a year and a half ago. At some point, I began to play less at Tottenham, and then Ajax came knocking a few times. It almost occurred back then, but it didn’t work out in the end. It has finally occurred.”
When asked about Ajax’s interest, Bergwijn said, “I was a little shocked.” Actually, I didn’t see it coming.
“But I was being left out of the team there, and you just want to play.” So it’s pretty enticing to return to Ajax. They consistently perform well in both the league and the Champions League. So it’s a step forward for me.”
Begwijn never reached his full potential in the Premier League, despite flashes of brilliance throughout his time at Tottenham.
The Dutchman scored eight goals in 83 appearances for Spurs, despite being overlooked by both Conte and Jose Mourinho.
