Maksim Paskotsi, an Estonian defender, has left Tottenham Hotspur to join Swiss club Grasshopper Zurich on a permanent basis.
The 20-year-old progressed through the ranks of his native club FC Flora before joining the Spurs academy in 2020, where he rapidly established himself as a goal-scoring defender.
Paskotsi scored five goals in 19 league games for Spurs’ Under-18s in the 2020-21 season, captaining the team twice and impressing Nuno Espirito Santo.
Paskotsi earned his first-team debut in the former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager’s Europa Conference League qualification first-leg loss to Pacos de Ferreira in August 2021, and he also appeared on the bench in the FA Cup and EFL Cup under Antonio Conte.
However, the 18-cap Estonia international was thereafter limited to brief appearances for the club’s Under-21s, appearing in just 14 Premier League 2 games during the seasons 2021-22 and 2022-23.
Paskotsi was tied to Spurs until 2024 with a one-year extension option, but he will now advance his career in Switzerland as Ange Postecoglou’s central options include Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Eric Dier, Ben Davies, and Ashley Phillips.
The 20-year-old joins fellow defender Davinson Sanchez, who has joined Galatasaray on a permanent basis, in leaving Tottenham this summer, along with Harry Kane, Harry Winks, Tanguy Ndombele, Lucas Moura, Sergio Reguilon, Djed Spence, Joe Rodon, and Japhet Tanganga.
