Ex-Tottenham player Anton Walkes has died aged 25.
His current club, US-based Charlotte FC, confirmed his death in a tweet, describing him as an “outstanding human being”.
He is believed to have been participating in a pre-season training camp in Florida with his team.
Walkes died following a boat crash, according to the Miami Herald.
The 25-year-old was taken to hospital after being given CPR when he was found unconscious after two boats collided near the Marine Stadium, the newspaper stated.
Walkes was a graduate of Tottenham’s academy and raised locally.
He was born in Lewisham in south London.
The defender played at senior level for the club in a single League Cup appearance.
Spurs tweeted: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former player, Anton Walkes.
“The thoughts of everyone at the club are with his family and friends at this incredibly sad time.”
The defender also turned out for Portsmouth and Atlanta United.
He played for Pompey between 2018 and 2020, and the south coast club joined those paying tribute, saying they were “extremely saddened” by the news.
