Tottenham beat out UCL clubs to sign generational defender from Croatia
Fabrizio Romano has given it a ‘here we go,’ Hajduk Split’s Luka Vuskovic will join Tottenham Hotspur after the team beat off opposition from other clubs. Romano further claims that Vuskovic preferred Spurs to other interested clubs. Manchester City and Newcastle were among the clubs interested in the player, as were a number of other clubs from across Europe. Vuskovic, who was born in 2007, is only 16 years old.
He has now made eight senior appearances for Croatia’s top flight club Hajduk Split. He has yet to play this season but has been on the bench for the club. He sustained a muscular ailment late last season, which may have hampered his comeback to Split. Vuskovic has only played for Croatia at the under-17 level so far, but it would not be shocking if he moves up to the national team’s under-18 setup in the near future.
The player is certainly a long-term investment for Tottenham, since he is likely to be several seasons away from contributing at the Premier League level. Regardless, he is recognized as one of the top young players in the world for his age group, particularly among under-17 defenders. Tottenham might sign the player and then loan him back to Hajduk Split for the rest of the 23/24 season so the player can continue to develop at a level he is familiar with.
