Tyrone Mings sent heartfelt message amid major Aston Villa injury concern
Latest Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive after defender Tyrone Mings picks up an injury during Newcastle United defeat
Sky Sports pundits Jamie Redknapp and Andros Townsend have offered their heartfelt words of support for Tyrone Mings after his injury against Newcastle on Saturday.
The Aston Villa defender was stretchered off in the first half of Villa’s 5-1 defeat against the Magpies at St James’ Park with the Villans 2-1 down at that point.
And the 30-year-old now looks set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up what appears to be a devastating injury. Villa boss Unai Emery confirmed after the game that “it doesn’t look good”
After the game, both Redknapp and Townsend offered their support for the injury-stricken centre-back.
“Fingers crossed it’s nothing serious, it didn’t look good,” Redknapp told Sky Sports. “It’s been a bad day because he’s had injuries before.
“Maybe it’s a little tweak but they now have a few injuries. Jacob Ramsey, he’s a really important player for this Villa midfield and he wasn’t playing today so it’s been a bad day. Diego Carlos, he did his Achilles in the second game last season so they’ll need a bit of adjustment now.”
Former Tottenham forward Townsend offered his perspective from recent personal experiences after suffering his own serious injury difficulties.
“As someone who has done their ACL recently, it’s not about Tyrone Mings the footballer, but the person,” he said.
“It’s about the players, the coaching staff, his family getting around him and making sure he’s ok through the whole process. Hopefully he’s ok.”
Everton defender ‘tortured’ by opponent in latest outing – ‘Disorganised’, lucky to not give away penalty
Despite his lack of game time this season under Sean Dyche at Everton, Vitaliy Mykolenko remains a starter for Ukraine at left-back.
He was there against England and kept his spot against Italy, where he endured an evening to forget at the hands of Nicolo Zaniolo.
That’s what Gazzetta dello Sport explain in their rating for the Everton defender, giving him a 5/10, simply starting off that he was ‘very bad’.
He wasn’t quite the worst on his team in their eyes, as that award, if you want to call it that, was reserved for Georgiy Sudakov, but they didn’t mince their words about Mykolenko either.
They quite happily report that the Everton left-back was ‘tortured’ by Zaniolo until the moment the playmaker was subbed off, while his ‘interventions were also disorganised’.
Mykolenko picked up a yellow card in the 38th minute and Gazzetta also believe he was ‘lucky’ when his foul on Riccardo Orsolini in the box wasn’t picked up, which would have led to a penalty for Italy.
Gazzetta have a separate bit about that incident in the newspaper as well, explaining that the referee slipped up regarding the incident, which happened just after the 90th minute.
Orsolini is described as being ‘swept away’ by the Everton player’s tackle, as he took out ‘the player and not the ball’.
In fact, the belief is it would have ‘been fair’ to give a penalty, and it was the only blip on an otherwise good performance by the Spanish referee.
