‘I am very low’ – James Maddison in heartfelt apology to Leicester fans after costly mistake in Bournemouth defeat
Leicester star James Maddison has apologized to fans after a shocking mistake cost them the match against Bournemouth.
The Foxes are in deep trouble after a 1-0 defeat to their fellow Premier League strugglers at the King Power Stadium, with Philip Billing scoring the only goal of the game in the first half.
And it came about after Maddison pulled off an awful back pass that was easily cut out, with the Cherries punishing the Leicester playmaker with a goal.
It saw the Englishman sink and put his head in his hands, with his mistake ultimately costing Leicester the match.
With the managerless side 19th in the table, it handed one of their relegation rivals a crucial victory and Maddison was crestfallen at full-time.
He said: “It was a really tough one to take. I am very low at the moment.
“We knew it was a big game and didn’t try and dress it up as anything else. We’ve worked really hard. I made a sloppy mistake and it cost us. I am very low.
“I’m always hungry to do well for the team. I tried to erase it and not do too much to make up for it.
“I am very low and sad in defeat because my mistake sort of cost the team. We have to dust ourselves down and go again.
“I’ll be sad tonight and probably tomorrow but we’ll get going again on Monday. It is so important we stay positive.
“We’ll try and rally the troops. I apologise to the fans for today, I thought they were brilliant.
“It is not brilliant for us in terms of results and performances aren’t quite there at the moment but it is important the fans stick with us.
“There is still a long way to go. It is tight down there. I would have preferred to win today. It wasn’t a make-or-break. There are still plenty of points to play for.”
Leicester find themselves in a perilous position in the Premier League after sacking Brendan Rodgers last Sunday.
Jesse Marsch is set to take over, just weeks after also getting the chop at Leeds earlier this campaign, while the American will have little time to implement his methods.
The Foxes have eight matches left in the Premier League while they are still just two points off safety.
But with so many teams woefully out of form, it could be a lottery who stays in the top tier this season.
Leicester caretaker boss Adam Sadley admitted that they did not deserve to beat Bournemouth, though, even if Maddison gave away the goal.
He said: “It is a really disappointing result. We can’t be happy with that performance. You can see a lack of confidence.
“My message to the players is to stick together, we’re only going to get through it together.
“There was a better response in the second half and we created chances but we weren’t able to get through a strong Bournemouth defence.”
