Morecambe FC under embargo from EFL over unpaid tax bill

The English Football League has imposed an embargo on Morecambe Football Club due to outstanding payments to HMRC.

The Shrimps have not complied with EFL guideline 17.3, which is about monies owed to HMRC specifically.

This means that until the club has fulfilled its current financial commitments and/or corrected the relevant breach to the EFL’s satisfaction, it is not allowed to increase the playing staff or enhance the team.

Embargoes are meant to serve as a disincentive for clubs who fail to fulfill their financial commitments to players or other teams, or that violate other important applicable norms like disclosing financial information.

The embargo is said to have been in effect since last Wednesday.

Morecambe FC has chosen not to provide formal comments on the situation.
