Both Lionel Messi and Chelsea’s star believe Tottenham’s player is the “best in the world.”
Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez both dubbed Cristian Romero the best center-back in the world after the Tottenham player provided a battling performance to help Argentina defeat Ecuador.

Romero has started the season well for the Spurs, and his relationship with Micky van de Ven has all the makings of a very solid one for the Lilywhites.

Because of his strong start to the season, the 25-year-old has been nominated to Whoscored’s best eleven for August from Europe’s top five leagues.

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has translated his club’s success into international football, excelling as the Albiceleste defeated Ecuador 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Buenos Aires on Thursday.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni was blown away by Romero’s performance, calling it a ‘great game’ (D-Sports).

Messi, who scored the game-winning goal for the World Champions with a brilliantly struck free kick in the 78th minute, praised the Spurs star’s performance.

Lionel Messi believes Spurs have a future superstar on their hands.

“For me, he [Cuti Romero] is the best defender in the world right now,” the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner told Telemundo. Tonight, you were the man of the match.”

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez agreed with Messi’s assessment, commenting on Romero’s Instagram post: “The best central in the world.”

The most fascinating aspect of Romero is that, at 25 years old, he is still far from reaching the pinnacle of his abilities. There is little doubt that the Tottenham player has the ability to develop into one of the world’s top center-backs if he is not already.
