Tottenham Hotspur are weighing up a move for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan but expect him to be very expensive.
Tottenham Hotspur are looking at Mike Maignan as a potential alternative to top goalkeeping target David Raya.
That is according to a report from The Athletic
, who claim that Tottenham have set their sights on signing Raya.
The Spaniard is out of contract in 2024 but Brentford are still demanding a hefty £40million for his signature.
That means Tottenham are ‘looking at other options’, with AC Milan stopper Mike Maignan thought to be a target.
However, the expectation is that Maignan will cost much more than Raya, possibly taking him out of Tottenham’s reach.
Maignan is taking over from Spurs stopper Hugo Lloris as France’s number one stopper and has thrived since joining Milan from Lille in 2021.
The 27-year-old has been hailed as ‘special’ by Clarence Seedorf and Milan will command a huge profit after paying just £13million for Maignan two years ago.
Tottenham Hotspur may have missed the boat on Mike Maignan
This is far from the first time that Tottenham have been linked with Maignan.
L’Equipe reported in 2021 that Tottenham were ‘very interested’ in signing Maignan from Lille, seeing him as competition for Lloris.
The Jose Mourinho era seemed like the right time for Tottenham to land Maignan.
Mourinho brought Lille goalkeeping coach Nuno Santos to Tottenham and he knew Maignan very well.
When Santos left Lille for Spurs in 2019, Maignan took to Twitter to thank him for his help in an emotional goodbye.
If Tottenham had offered Maignan the chance to follow Santos to North London, he think the Frenchman would have been seriously tempted.
Tottenham chose to carry on with Lloris instead and now we are here; Lloris is sadly past his best and has been for a while, looks set to leave and Spurs have no contingency plan in place.
Spurs may want Maignan now but they can expect a huge price tag on his head – possibly even higher than the fee for Raya.
